Who am I?
It’s the simplest question, yet I do not know how to answer it.
You may think this first blog is to let everyone know who I am, but it’s actually for me. I do not know how to reply.
I am a 19 year old Korean-American. My name is Daniel Lee. I am a college student who attends the University of Virginia. I am going to the army after college.
True, these replies can answer that question – but they are amazingly superficial.
If anyone were to approach me today and ask me, “Who are you?” I would not know how to answer him/her. I can not possibly answer him/her with a 3 minute dialogue about events that sum up my identity. That simply means I do not know who I am. No, I need a short and sweet reply that epitomizes my identity. It may seem like a silly thing to worry about, but it worries me a great deal.
What defines me as a person? What can I possibly answer, that completely defines me? How would you answer that question?
I realized in order to answer this troubling question, you need to put yourself in a hypothetical situation. Say you and I were stripped of all our wealth. Both you and I lose our homes, our cars, our jobs, our friends, etc. You and I remain deserted, desolate and forsaken.
Status-enabling possessions and positions are nothing but external labels of character. Those do not and can not define who you are. Who you are remains after all of these are stripped from you. Now, we have nothing. Who are you? Who am I?

In the darkest of times, throughout our trials and tribulations, it is the essence of who we are that enables us to overcome our obstacles.
Allow me to be that “anyone” to approach you and ask, “Who are you?” Have you come up with an answer yet?
I have.
“I am a child of God.” Simple as that. I choose this phrase to define me regardless of where I am, what I own and who I meet. My identity as a Christian will not waver no matter how much status or wealth I acquire – because if it does, then it does not and can not define me.
So, take a moment and consider what you will cling to and identify yourself with when you are stripped of your worldly possessions and claims to fame. When left deserted, desolate and forsaken, who are you?
